ATTACKING ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION

First, What is anxiety? Fear, anger, and frustration

Such a level of anxiety, can and will cause a risk for heart disease and high blood pressure.

Second, What is post-traumatic stress? It's when one is constantly reminded of an event and relives it over and over again in their minds.

9/11 Attacks
It has been linked by the press that more and more New Yorkers are diagnosed with post traumatic stress due to this attack. As individuals we are always worry. We all worry about our finances, our loved ones, our jobs, our health and a host of other life issues; but look what the Word of God says, in Matthew 6:25-26

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes, look a the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap or store away in barns and yet, your heavenly Father feeds them.

For some of us, it may be hard to relate to Jesus' words concerning worry, after all, Jesus had no children, no boss, no car payments, PTA meetings after school and putting dinner on the table, care for his elderly parents and help his teenagers plan for college at the same time (Amen). However, he knew that we would someday have to and so therefore he reminds us of this scripture as well as others concerning worry because worry produces stress.

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus says, "For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation." Phil. 4:12

Casting cares, not our responsibilities

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him, for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:26,7

Don't be afraid of responsibility, learn to cast your care upon Jesus. Some people learn not to worry about anything, because they understand this principle in the word of God.

Remember, that if God gives you whatever you ask Him for, there is a responsibility that goes along with the blessing. If you own a home or a car, God expects you to take care of it, but when we focus on Him, He helps us to resume our responsibilities worry-free.

I recall a time when I didn't put God first in my life and all the cares and worries came down on me (anxiety). Ask God to give your rest and peace. Jesus said, come to me, all of you who are weary and heavy burden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matt. 11:28-29)

I have found that my most powerful presecription for healthy living can't be found in a bottle or at a pharmacist's counter. It has one exclusive source, and it is freely available to everyone. I am talking about the Word of God, of course.

Joy and peace can come to every troubled mind when people discover new ways of looking at life, based upon the truth of God's wonderful word. Most depressed people have a very pessimistic attitude and are constantly beating themselves down with their thoughts, words and attitudes. Depressed people are usually in a pessimistic rut of negative thought that they cannot break out of on their own. That is why I believe it is absolutely essential for people battling depression to begin rewiring their negative thoughts with the Word of God. These biblical self-talks are extremely important in overcoming depression.

How do I begin? Begin to read scriptures aloud at least three times a day before you eat your meals and at bed time. Whenever a negative thought comes to mind, quote a scripture aloud to break the habit of negative thinking.

Those who have been ransomed by the Lord will return to Jerusalem, singing songs of everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be overcome with joy and gladness. (Isa. 51:11)

Don't quit. Don't give up.

God's hope and joy are available to fill your life.

Here is a prayer cure for you:

Lord, help me to know which vitamins, supplements and herbs to take that will help my body fight depression. Give me rest and strength as I seek your will in my life. Father God, remove the weight of pride, depression and sadness from my life. Help me to remember your Word as I seek wisdom and guidance in overcoming every aspect of depression in my life. I trust you, and I know that your Word is true.

Lord Jesus, you said that your purpose was to give life in all its fullness. I thank you in advance for releasing this fullness in my life. In your name I pray these things with thanksgiving and praise.

Dear friends, don't be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through instead, be very glad, because these trials will make you partners with Christ in his suffering, and afterward you will have the wonderful day of sharing his glory. (1 Peter 4:12-13)
